E. Denise Stovell, President, Stovell Marketing and Public
Relations (SMPR), leaped into entrepreneurship while still a professional
dancer. In between performances and rehearsals, she wrote press releases, called
reporters and distributed flyers. That was in 1976. In 1996, she formed her own
marketing and public relations firm after nearly 25 years as a marketing and PR
professional. Today, SMPR develops and manages marketing and public relations
programs for nonprofit organizations, small businesses and corporations. Her firm
specializes in marketing strategy, public relations, content development and event
management.
Denise began her career as a marketing communications professional
in 1982 when she became a "media tour coordinator" for Edelman Public Relations
Worldwide in Chicago. Following senior management positions with Edelman, Burrell
Communications Group, Sara Lee Corporation, Museum of Broadcast Communications
and Brookfield Zoo, she launched her own firm with a client list that included
Sears, Roebuck and Company, Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, Flowers Communications
Group, McDonald's Corporation and DePaul University. Currently, her client list
includes the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), Philip Morris USA, Airport Minority Business Council and MBE Magazine.
Denise is especially proud of her company's contributions
to the development and implementation of WBENC's marketing strategies, and signature
programs which include its annual Salute to Women's Business Enterprises: The
Enterprising Economy, the Women in Business national conference
and business fair, and America's Top Corporations for Women's Business Enterprises
(WBEs) program.
Denise has received a number of awards including Outstanding
Women's Business Enterprise Special Achievement Award presented by the Coalition
for United Community Action and the Silver Trumpet Award from the Publicity Club
of Chicago. She recently completed the first Tuck-WBENC Executive Program, sponsored
by IBM Corporation, for women business owners. The week long intensive business
management program was designed especially for WBENC-certified women's business
enterprises by the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
Denise holds a BA from
Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois, and resides in Washington, DC. She has a son, Reginald, who received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, and a Masters Degree in Finance from The American University of Paris in Paris, France.
He currently serves as an Account Executive and Manager of Finance for SMPR.
